I ordered a bar of annealed D2 (CR12Mo1V1) steel for testing for steel stamps making.
In the past I made the steel stamps mostly out of either O1 for cold stamping or H-13 for hot stamping. D2 steel have better toughness and hardness than O1 steel, added to that they are also of AIR Hardening type - thus is easier to heat treat to a more uniform result. Yesterday I test machined a stamp with this new material and I am fully convinced. From now on, unless there are special request, all cold stamping stamps will be made of D2 material.
